Model Highlights

Pros

Simple, strong value-for-money is at the root of the 2008 Corolla's appeal, which has extremely low ownership costs, according to Toyota, due to its high reliability, fuel efficiency, and resale value. However Corolla doesn't skimp on ride and refinement. Especially when optioned with available safety equipment, the small sedan should fit the needs of commuters and young families on a budget.

Model Highlights

The 2008 Toyota Corolla comes in three different models: the base CE, sporty S, and better equipped LE. Each can be equipped with either a five-speed manual transmission or four-speed automatic. The 126-horsepower, 1.8L four-cylinder engine that powers all Corollas has variable valve timing with intelligence, which helps give it good response through the rev range without hampering fuel efficiency. With the manual transmission, the Corolla can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in just under nine seconds, according to Toyota, yet it achieves EPA fuel economy ratings of 28 mpg city, 35 mpg highway. The Corolla has a roomy interior and comfortable ride, yet a stiff structure and variable-assist rack-and-pinion steering give it a nimble feel. The back seat is split 60/40 and folds forward to expand the 13.6-cubic-foot trunk. Side-bolster front-seat air bags and full-length curtain air bags are available as an option across the line, as are anti-lock brakes, while electronic stability control is available only on LE and S models with the optional automatic transmission. Models equipped with the stability control system and anti-lock brakes also get brake assist, which helps apply full brake force in emergency braking. Standard equipment on the base CE model includes air conditioning, tilt steering, a height-adjustable driver's seat, a trunk lamp, power mirrors, and a CD sound system with four speakers. The S model adds a sportier look, with smoked headlamp lenses, integrated front fog lamps, under-body spoilers, rocker panel extensions, and rear mudguards, and it also upgrades to power locks, map lights, and a six-speaker sound system. The LE doesn't get all the sporty appearance cues of the S but instead has remote keyless entry, power windows, and woodgrain trim. Other major options include a power moonroof, alloy wheels, and an eight-speaker JBL sound system with six-disc changer.

Model News

The Toyota Corolla is carried over to 2008 unchanged; it will be completely redesigned for 2009.
